Healthy Tips

Be active for your health! Being active is important for both physical health and mental health.  Regular physical activity can prevent weight gain and strengthen your muscles. Being active can relieve stress and increase your sense of well-being. Physical activity can be anything you enjoy!  Add some variety so you don’t get bored or stuck in a rut.  Try: walking on your block or at the park, joining a live online class, doing a video on YouTube, dancing, doing strengthening exercises while watching TV, or walking up and down the stairs in your building. If you are just getting started with physical activity

  1. Start slow: start where you are and build up your program over a few weeks or a few months (such as walking 10 minutes a day and adding 5 more minutes each week until you are walking 30 minutes most days);
  2. Break it up: if you can’t fit in 30 minutes of aerobic activity all at once, do it 10 minutes at a time throughout the day – like before work, during a work break, and after dinner;
  3. Get support: find an exercise partner or go to a class for beginners;
  4. Make a plan to get started: include what you will do, how much (such as time or distance), when (time of day, days of week), and how many days (such as “I will ride my stationary bike for 10 minutes, after lunch, on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday”).
